Rare First Edition Science Fiction and Classic Literature

The Quill and Parchment specializes in first editions of Golden Age science fiction and classic American literature, with a particular focus on the small presses that gave the genre its permanent form: Gnome Press, Fantasy Press, and Shasta Publishers. Every title in the inventory is examined for first edition points before it's offered for sale, and all SF titles are cross-referenced against L.W. Currey's Science Fiction and Fantasy Authors and Chalker and Owings' The Science-Fantasy Publishers. If credible bibliographic evidence ever contradicts a published description, we'll accept the return and issue a full refund.

What sets us apart isn't the inventory. It's the research.

Founder Matt Thompson is a former journalist and editor who applies the same sourcing discipline to rare books that he once applied to investigative reporting. Every title we carry has been examined for first edition points, printing statements, binding variants, dust jacket states, and other identifying characteristics that separate a true first printing from a later edition or a book club copy. We distinguish carefully between what a listing claims and what the evidence actually supports.

Every book comes with a detailed condition report and first edition documentation covering:

  • Verified first edition and first printing identification points

  • Condition assessment using established rare book grading standards

  • Dust jacket issue details and pricing, where applicable

  • Printing history and known variants

  • Provenance or association copy information, when present

Misidentified first editions are common in the online market, particularly in mid-century science fiction, where binding variants, remainder copies, and book club editions are routinely confused with true firsts. Part of what the shop does is write about that. The Resources section is where those findings live, in the form of identification guides, publisher histories, and collector's notes.

We carry books for serious collectors and those just building a collection: high-grade investment-quality firsts, carefully vetted mid-tier copies, and the occasional exceptional find with documented provenance. If you're looking for a specific title that isn't currently in inventory, get in touch. The shop sources actively.
