Rare Sci-Fi. Classic Lit. Rigorous Investigation.
The Quill and Parchment is a small, deliberately curated antiquarian shop based in Red Wing, Minnesota, specializing in first editions of Golden Age science fiction and classic American literature.
The Golden Age focus runs deep. Gnome Press, Fantasy Press, and Shasta Publishers — the specialty houses that gave science fiction its permanent hardcover form in the late 1940s and 1950s — are the shop's core collecting territory. Classic American literature rounds out the inventory: Hemingway, Steinbeck, Twain, Fitzgerald, Wharton, and their contemporaries, where first editions surface regularly and the research discipline that applies to SF titles applies just as well.
That research discipline is the point. Founder Matt Thompson spent his career as a journalist and editor, and he brings the same sourcing rigor to rare books that he once applied to investigative reporting: verify the claim, trace it to a primary source, and say clearly what the evidence supports and what it doesn't. Every title in the inventory is examined for first edition points before it's offered for sale — copyright page statements, binding variants, dust jacket states, number lines, gutter codes. SF titles are cross-referenced against L.W. Currey's Science Fiction and Fantasy Authors and Chalker and Owings' The Science-Fantasy Publishers. Classic literature titles are verified against comparable bibliographic references.
Misidentified first editions are common in the online market, especially in Golden Age science fiction, where binding variants, remainder bindings, and book club editions are routinely mislabeled by non-specialist sellers. Part of what The Quill and Parchment does is write about that — the Resources section of the site is where those findings live, in the form of identification guides, publisher histories, and collector's notes. The goal is to give collectors the tools to evaluate what they're looking at, whether they buy from this shop or somewhere else.
Every book is sold with a detailed condition report and first edition documentation. All orders ship in archival-quality packaging. For significant copies, the documentation is printed and included with the shipment.
If you're looking for a specific title that isn't currently in inventory, get in touch. The shop sources actively and can often find what you're looking for.
If credible bibliographic evidence ever contradicts a published description, The Quill and Parchment will accept the return and issue a full refund.
