The Mixed Men by A.E. van Vogt | Gnome Press, New York, 1952 | First Edition

$100.00

Story & Significance

The Mixed Men is a 1952 Gnome Press first edition and one of the earliest fix-up novels in science fiction history. A.E. van Vogt not only pioneered the form but informally named it: the practice of weaving previously published short stories into a cohesive book-length narrative. The three core stories had run in Astounding Science Fiction between 1943 and 1945. For the Gnome Press edition, van Vogt added a novella-length bridge section and a new epilogue, material that exists in its original form only here.

The novel is space opera built around van Vogt’s characteristic obsessions: hidden identity, metacognition, and the individual caught between loyalties that cannot be reconciled. Peter Maltby, captain of the feared Mixed Men, has to hold together a fractured interstellar civilization against the forces of Imperial Earth while navigating a relationship with the commander sent to conquer him. It is not van Vogt’s most celebrated book, but it is thoroughly his: propulsive, paranoid, operating on its own logic.

Physical Description

Publisher: Gnome Press, New York, 1952. First edition so stated on copyright page. Binding is blue boards with spine lettered in orange, Currey’s first binding priority for this title (Science Fiction and Fantasy Authors, p. 399). The boards show light rubbing and bumping to surfaces and corners. The text block is clean, however, the rear free endpaper is beginning to separate from the rest of the text block. Otherwise, the binding is solid.

The unclipped dust jacket features art by Ric Binkley and is in Good condition, with small creases and chipping consistent with age and handling. The previous owner’s bookplate on the front pastedown identifies W.B. Mackey. Light pencil writing appears on the front free endpaper. The remaining pages are clean and unmarked. Photographs of the bookplate and pencil notation are included in the listing images.

Collector’s Note

Two bindings exist for this title, with priority established by Currey: blue boards with orange spine lettering precedes the blue cloth with red lettering. This copy is the first priority binding. The unclipped jacket at $2.75 is correct for the first edition. The W.B. Mackey bookplate and pencil notation on the front free endpaper are disclosed fully above and documented in the listing photographs. The binding is sound and the text block is clean throughout. A solid collecting copy of a scarce Gnome Press title in the preferred binding, honestly priced to reflect its condition.
