The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien - First Edition

$54.99

This first edition copy of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Silmarillion” is in near fine condition with bright green cloth boards with gold gilding; crisp, clean pages, and minimal shelf ware. The only writing is a previous owner’s inscription on the front end paper. The dust jacket is also in good condition, with very slight bumping and a small tear.

“The Silmarillion” is a richly woven tapestry of myths and legends that serves as the foundational narrative of Middle-earth. It chronicles the history of the world from its creation by the deity Eru Ilúvatar, who engenders the Ainur, divine spirits of great power. Among them, Melkor, the most gifted yet prideful, seeks dominion over the world, creating disharmony.

The narrative introduces the Elves, the firstborn of Ilúvatar's creations, and details their awakening in the land of Middle-earth. The Elves create the Silmarils, three radiant jewels containing the light of the Two Trees of Valinor, which are central to the unfolding tragedies. Melkor, consumed by jealousy and ambition, steals the Silmarils, leading to a cycle of conflict known as the Wars of Beleriand.

The tale chronicles the heroics and tragic fates of various key figures, including Fëanor, the Elven prince who forged the Silmarils; the tragic love story of Beren and Lúthien, whose deeds become legendary; and the valor of Túrin Turambar, whose life is marked by a grim curse. Ultimately, the narrative is one of hope and despair, reflecting themes of exile, redemption, and the enduring struggle against darkness.

The Silmarillion concludes with the ruin of the First Age and hints at the promise of a Second Age, setting the stage for the events of “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings.” Through its intricate mythos, Tolkien establishes a profound and complex world that continues to enchant and inspire readers. This is an excellent copy and a must-have for any Tolkien collector.
